It’s endlessly fascinating how guys like Newt Gingrich and other conservatives are so concerned and up in arms over “rights,” “liberty,” our Constitution, and “democracy.” Conservatives even managed to get an entire movement of white, middle to upper-class people to believe their “rights” and “liberties” were somehow being infringed upon by nonexistent socialism.

What these guys don’t tell you is that the concept of liberty, which is applied to persons in our Constitution, only applies to them and people who look, think, and act like them. Only they are people worthy of fundamental rights and when the definition of a person becomes inconvenient to them, they change it. For example, in this country, corporations have more legal rights as “persons” than living, breathing people with flesh and blood who happen to be undocumented. These individuals, many of which have come here to escape the resulting horrors of the atrocities committed by the United States in Central and South America, are considered “unpersons.” Instead, we treat people who merely do not happen to have a few papers that denote them as citizens of the United States as dangerous animals because in this country, they are “unpeople.”

When the wrong kind of people demand a certain right, one which everyone else is permitted to exercise, suddenly they’re unpeople. People who happen to be gay aren’t considered enough of a person to be eligible to participate in the institution of marriage, the right to which our Supreme Court declared as fundamental decades ago. People who happen to be Muslim or of a Middle Eastern descent aren’t human enough to enjoy some of the most fundamental and easy to understand rights guaranteed by our Constitution, such as the right to privacy or the guarantee of due process of law. Women and individuals with uteri aren’t regarded as human enough to be able to govern over their own bodies. Instead, their uteri are merely incubators to something that has a very good chance of killing them. We dehumanize those whose rights we wish to repress in order to justify our actions.

When these guys start talking about liberty or freedom to win political points, tune them out because there’s a damn good chance that they’re not talking about you. They’re quite simply not interested in upholding freedom, liberty, or any of the rights guaranteed by our Constitution or by our democratic system and they should have no place governing within it.
